Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and Telegram figures come from developer docs, which set the limits for scheduling apps. Some apps allow more when you post by hand.

What sizes should you use for Instagram posts, Reels and Stories?

For the feed, Meta's API accepts JPEG, width 320 to 1440 px, aspect 4:5 to 1.91:1, sRGB, and Instagram stores photos at Up to 1080x1080 px stored. Reels and Stories are recommended in vertical 9:16. A Reel published by a scheduling app is held to the API length limit shown below, which is shorter than the limit in the Instagram app itself.

Instagram's official numbers come from 2 places. The Instagram Graph API reference sets the rules that every scheduling app has to follow, and the Instagram help centre describes what the app itself allows. The table below gives both where they differ.

For feed photos, a tall 4:5 image takes up the most room in the feed, such as 1080 by 1350 pixels. Schedulely crops feed photos to 4:5 automatically, and you can edit the crop before scheduling. The grid preview then shows how the post sits on the real profile.

Schedulely publishes feed photos, carousels of up to 10 items with photos and videos mixed, Reels and Stories. Stories can be photos or videos, and several frames go up in order, 1 minute or 1 hour apart. Each client has 1 main Instagram account, and that account's grid is what the grid preview shows.

Where do official docs disagree, and which number should you trust?

Several networks publish one limit in their help centre and another in their developer docs. Instagram, X, LinkedIn and Discord all have such gaps. If you post through a scheduling app, the developer docs apply, because the app has to follow the API. If you post by hand, the help centre applies.

The most common gap is between what a network's own app allows and what it lets other apps do. Instagram is the clearest example: the app accepts bigger carousels and longer Reels than the Content Publishing API, so a scheduler is held to the smaller API numbers.

X goes the other way. Its help page for videos gives a shorter length and a smaller file size for web uploads than its API media docs, which allow much longer and larger videos. LinkedIn's Videos API page gives one file size in its limits and a much larger one in the description of its upload field. Discord's support article and its developer reference give different default file caps.

Some gaps are simply about time. Bluesky launched video with a shorter limit in 2024 and has since raised it, so older guides still quote the first figure. When numbers clash, trust the newest official source, and test with one real upload before you export a whole batch.

What video sizes and lengths work on TikTok, YouTube and the other networks?

Vertical 9:16 video is the safe default for Reels, TikTok, Shorts and Stories. Length limits vary widely, from short Google Business Profile clips to YouTube videos of many hours for verified accounts. File size limits vary just as much, so check the table before exporting a long or high bitrate video.

TikTok's developer docs give video dimensions as Each side 360 to 4096 px; 23 to 60 fps; MP4/WebM/MOV. Ads spec: 9:16 recommended. YouTube treats a square or vertical video as a Short when it runs Up to 3 minutes, square or vertical, and its standard shape is 16:9 standard (Shorts square or vertical); 426x240 to 7680x4320. Facebook Reels follow 9:16; 1080x1920 recommended, min 540x960; 24 to 60 fps. If you export one vertical master file, it will suit most of these networks.

In Schedulely, a TikTok post is one video, published through TikTok's Direct Post. Until TikTok finishes auditing the Schedulely app, those posts publish as private, visible only to the account owner. A YouTube post is one video with a title, privacy setting and made for kids option, and a vertical video of up to 3 minutes is published as a Short automatically. On Facebook Pages, a video is posted as a Reel.

Schedulely does not post video to LinkedIn, Pinterest, Bluesky or Google Business Profile yet, so the video limits for those networks matter only when you post there by hand.

What image sizes work on Pinterest, X, LinkedIn and the rest?

Pinterest recommends tall portrait images, YouTube thumbnails follow the widescreen video shape, and Google Business Profile recommends a square photo. Most other networks accept a range of shapes but cap the file size, which is lowest on Bluesky, so compress large phone photos before you upload them anywhere.

Pinterest is the network where shape matters most. Its product specs give PNG/JPEG; 2:3 recommended (1000x1500), and Schedulely publishes photo Pins with a title and link to a board you choose. Video Pins are not supported in Schedulely yet.

LinkedIn limits images by total pixel count rather than by megabytes, so a very large camera file may need resizing even if it looks small on disk. Schedulely posts text and photos to personal LinkedIn profiles.

Bluesky has the tightest image file cap, so phone photos often need compressing. Schedulely posts text and up to 4 photos to Bluesky, and posts and threads with media to X. Mastodon's limits are server defaults and can differ on the server you use; Schedulely posts one video or up to 4 photos there. Tumblr takes one video or up to 10 photos per post through Schedulely, and Google Business Profile updates take one photo.

How does Schedulely handle image and video sizes when you schedule?

Schedulely crops Instagram feed photos to 4:5 with a crop you can edit, shows a preview for each network before you schedule, and places planned posts on the real Instagram grid. Media can come from your computer, phone, a Google Drive link or the client's library, and each network's own limits still apply.

Schedulely is a social media scheduler made by SureSocial that posts to 14 networks from one planner. You write once, attach media and check the preview for each network. The preview shows roughly how a post will look there, and this size guide tells you whether the file itself fits.

For Google Drive links, Schedulely downloads the file itself, so Drive sharing must be set to Anyone with the link. Bulk scheduling takes a Drive link as the fourth column of each spreadsheet row, which suits a week of media prepared in one export.

If a post fails, for example because a file was too large for a network, it moves to the Failed tab of the posts list and can be retried in 1 tap after you fix it. Posts for a signed out account wait safely and go out after reconnecting. Everything that is built is free during early access.

Who it's for, and who it isn't

A good fit if you

  • Export images and videos for several networks and want one reference for every limit
  • Schedule through an app and need the API limits rather than the in app ones
  • Prepare media for clients and want to avoid failed uploads
  • Want to see where official docs disagree before trusting a single number

Not the right fit if you

  • Need a tool that resizes or compresses files for you, which this guide does not do
  • Want design templates or mockups rather than official limits

Questions people ask

What size should an Instagram post be in 2026?

Meta's API documentation accepts feed images as JPEG, width 320 to 1440 px, aspect 4:5 to 1.91:1, sRGB, and Instagram stores photos at Up to 1080x1080 px stored. A 4:5 portrait image, such as 1080 by 1350 pixels, fills the most space in the feed. Schedulely crops feed photos to 4:5 automatically, and you can adjust the crop before the post is scheduled.

What is the best video size for Reels, TikTok and Shorts?

Vertical 9:16 is the safe choice for all three. Meta recommends 9:16 for Reels and Stories, TikTok's ads guidance recommends 9:16, and YouTube treats square or vertical videos of Up to 3 minutes, square or vertical as Shorts. Export at 1080 by 1920 pixels and you can reuse the same file across all three networks.

Why can I post a longer Reel in the Instagram app than through a scheduler?

Because the app and the API have different limits. The Instagram Reels page says Reels can run Up to 20 minutes, but Meta's Content Publishing API, which every scheduling app must use, allows 3 seconds to 15 minutes. Carousels differ too: the app allows 20 photos and videos, the API 10 items, which is why Schedulely carousels hold up to 10 items.

What size should a Pinterest Pin be?

Pinterest's product specs recommend PNG/JPEG; 2:3 recommended (1000x1500), with a maximum file size of 20 MB desktop, 32 MB in app. Pin titles can be 100 characters (first 40 may show in feed) long. Schedulely publishes photo Pins with a title and link to a board you choose; video Pins are not supported in Schedulely yet, so post those directly on Pinterest for now.

How long can a YouTube Short be?

YouTube's help centre says Shorts can be Up to 3 minutes, square or vertical. In Schedulely there is no separate Shorts switch: a vertical video of up to 3 minutes is published as a Short automatically, and longer or horizontal videos go up as standard videos with your title, privacy setting and made for kids choice.

What is the maximum image file size on Bluesky and X?

Bluesky's AT Protocol lexicon caps each image at 2 MB (2,000,000 bytes), with up to 4 images per post. X's API docs allow 5 MB (GIF 15 MB) per image and Up to 4 photos, or 1 GIF, or 1 video. Phone photos often exceed these caps, so compress them first. Schedulely posts up to 4 photos to Bluesky, and posts and threads with media to X.
