How to schedule X posts and threads
Schedulely schedules posts and threads to X with up to 4 photos, a GIF or a video, and publishes them at the time you choose in each client's time zone. Posting to X is free during early access; after that it becomes a separate $10 a month add on for any plan, because X charges apps for every post.
Workspaces that never post to X leave it switched off and never pay for it.

What can you schedule on X with Schedulely?
Schedulely publishes single X posts and threads, with text plus up to 4 photos, or 1 GIF, or 1 video. A thread goes out as a chain, each part replying to the one before, so a longer idea arrives in order at the scheduled time rather than as separate, unconnected posts.
X counts characters in its own way. A standard post can be 280 characters (weighted; URLs count 23; CJK count 2), so a link always takes the same space however long the address is. Schedulely counts the same way and holds every post and every thread part to that standard limit.
That has one consequence for paying X subscribers. X Premium allows much longer single posts inside X (Up to 25,000 characters), but Schedulely keeps to the standard limit for everyone, so for a long piece write a thread, or post it directly in X.
Media follows X's rules: Up to 4 photos, or 1 GIF, or 1 video. A video or GIF has to be the only attachment on its post. If a thread stops partway, for example because the connection dropped, a retry carries on from the next part that has not gone out, so nothing posts twice and the order holds.
| Post type | Official limit | In Schedulely |
|---|---|---|
| Text post | 280 characters (weighted; URLs count 23; CJK count 2) | Yes, counted the way X counts |
| Photos | Up to 4 photos, or 1 GIF, or 1 video; 5 MB (GIF 15 MB) | Yes, up to 4 photos per post |
| Video | 2 min 20 s (140 s); Premium up to 4 hours; 512 MB; Premium 16 GB | Yes, one video as the only attachment |
| Thread | Each reply: 280 characters (replies are posts) | Yes, parts post in order as replies |
| Long post | Up to 25,000 characters with Premium | No, standard limit applies |
X's help pages and its API documents give different video limits, so check the source links before you plan long videos.
Why does posting to X cost extra in Schedulely?
X charges apps for every post they publish and every reply they read through its API, unlike most networks, which let approved apps publish for free. Rather than raise every plan, Schedulely makes X a separate $10 a month add on after early access, so only people who post to X pay for it.
A scheduler has two choices when a network bills per post. It can spread that cost across all customers, including those who never touch X, or it can charge the people who use it. Schedulely chose the second.
- During early access, posting to X is free, like everything else in Schedulely.
- After early access, X posting becomes an add on at $10 a month that works with any plan: Starter, Pro or Agency.
- Workspaces that skip X leave it switched off in their network settings and pay nothing extra.
Agencies often pass platform costs on to clients. For that, Schedulely keeps an X cost report per client that you can download as CSV or PDF, so the cost can be billed accurately rather than guessed. The add on is bought on the web at app.tryschedulely.com, never through an app store, and you will be told before any charge begins.
How do you schedule an X thread with Schedulely, step by step?
Connect the X account through X's own sign in, start a new post, write the first part, add the following parts as thread parts, attach photos or a video, check the preview and pick a time. At that time Schedulely posts the first part and then each following part as a reply.
- Turn on X. In the workspace's network settings, switch X on if it is hidden.
- Connect the account. Schedulely opens X's own sign in page, so nobody shares a password. A client can connect their own account from a connect link.
- Write the opening post. Make it stand on its own, because many people will only see this part in their feed.
- Add thread parts. Each part has its own limit of 280 characters (replies are posts), and an empty part is flagged before you schedule.
- Attach media. Up to 4 photos, or a single GIF or video.
- Pick a time. The time follows the client's own time zone.
The thread then waits in Upcoming. If something fails, it appears in Failed and 1 tap retries from where it stopped. If news breaks and the post no longer fits, unschedule it before it goes out.
When is the best time to post on X?
Buffer and Hootsuite both point to weekday mornings, roughly 09:00 to 11:00, with Wednesday strong in both. Sprout Social instead favours the afternoon, from 12:00 to 18:00 on Tuesday to Thursday. So the studies agree on weekdays but disagree on the hour, which is worth testing yourself.
All three studies report times in the audience's local time.
- Buffer analysed 8.7 million posts. Wednesday was the best day, then Tuesday and Thursday, with Saturday and Friday worst. The top slots were Tuesday at 09:00 and Wednesday at 10:00 and 09:00, and evenings from 18:00 to 23:00 were the weakest.
- Hootsuite, with Critical Truth, recommends Wednesday to Friday from 09:00 to 11:00 and 10:00 on Monday and Tuesday, and says to avoid posting before 05:00.
- Sprout Social found Monday 14:00 to 15:00 and 17:00, and Tuesday to Thursday 12:00 to 18:00.
X moves fast, so timing matters more here than on most networks. A sensible test is to run the same kind of post in a morning slot and an afternoon slot for a few weeks. Schedulely has no X analytics, so compare results in X's own tools.
What can't Schedulely do on X yet?
Schedulely does not read or answer X replies, mentions or DMs, because its inbox works with Instagram only. It has no X analytics, does not publish Premium length posts and cannot schedule a first reply as a separate step. After early access, X posting also needs the $10 a month add on.
Here is the honest list for X.
- No X inbox. Replies, mentions and DMs on X stay in X. The labelled inbox, saved replies and automations cover Instagram only.
- No analytics. Impressions and engagement live in X's own tools.
- Standard length only. Each post and thread part is held to the standard character count, even for Premium accounts.
- No first comment. Not available on any network. On X, a thread does the same job: put the link or extra detail in the second part.
- Paid after early access. X posting becomes an add on, for the reason explained above.
What works well is the planning: threads that post in order, one calendar with a row per client in their own time zone, approval links so a client can approve a thread with a swipe, and a cost report per client so the X add on is easy to pass on.
Who it's for, and who it isn't
A good fit if you
- Founders and brands who post threads on X and want them to go out in order
- Agencies that need X costs reported per client as CSV or PDF
- Teams that post the same news to X, Threads and LinkedIn from one composer
Not the right fit if you
- Accounts that need to answer X replies, mentions and DMs inside the scheduler
- Premium subscribers who mainly publish single posts longer than the standard limit
- Anyone who needs X analytics in the same tool
Questions people ask
Can I schedule X posts for free?
Yes, for now. Posting to X is free during early access, including threads with photos or video. After early access, X posting becomes a separate $10 a month add on that works with any plan, because X charges apps for every post and every reply read. You will be told before anything is charged.
Does Schedulely support X threads?
Yes. Write the first post, add the following parts as thread parts and schedule it. At the set time, Schedulely posts the first part and then each part as a reply to the one before. If a thread stops partway, a retry continues from the next unposted part, so nothing posts twice.
Why is X an add on in Schedulely when other networks are included?
X bills apps for API use, so every post Schedulely publishes and every reply it reads has a cost. Most networks do not charge approved apps for publishing. Keeping X as a separate $10 a month add on means people who never post to X do not pay for it.
Can Schedulely post long X Premium posts?
No. X Premium allows longer single posts inside X (Up to 25,000 characters), but Schedulely holds every post and thread part to the standard limit of 280 characters (weighted; URLs count 23; CJK count 2). For longer pieces, write a thread in Schedulely or publish the long post directly in X.
Can I post a video to X with Schedulely?
Yes. Attach one video, which must be the only attachment on that post. X's help pages give this length: 2 min 20 s (140 s); Premium up to 4 hours, while its API documents state a different limit, so keep videos short to be safe. You can also attach up to 4 photos, or a single GIF, instead.
Does Schedulely answer X replies and DMs?
No. The Schedulely inbox, with its labels, saved replies and automations, works with Instagram only. Replies, mentions and DMs on X stay in X itself. Schedulely's job on X is publishing posts and threads on time and reporting the X cost per client.
