What can Schedulely publish to Tumblr?

Schedulely publishes Tumblr posts with text and either one video or up to 10 photos, to a blog you choose. Hashtags you write in the caption become Tumblr tags on the post. Posts go straight onto the blog at the scheduled time rather than into Tumblr's own queue or drafts.

Tumblr builds posts from blocks: a text block, then images, then a video, and so on. Schedulely uses that format directly. Your caption becomes the text block, followed by the photos in the order you added them, or by the video.

Tags are how Tumblr posts get found, so Schedulely handles them for you. Any hashtag in your caption, such as #illustration or #slowfashion, is added to the post as a Tumblr tag, up to 30 of them. The hashtag also stays in the text where you wrote it, so if you would rather keep the text clean, put the hashtags on a final line.

Tumblr itself allows 30 from web, 10 from apps photos per post, depending on where you post from. Schedulely takes up to 10 photos, the same as Tumblr's apps. Tumblr's other post types, which it lists as Text, photo, quote, link, chat, audio, video, poll, are not all available: Schedulely posts text, photo and video posts only.

What are Tumblr's limits for text, images, video and tags?

A Tumblr text block can hold 4,096 characters per text block; post total 524,288 incl. reblog trail. Images can be up to 20 MB JPEG/PNG/WEBP; GIF 5 MB (10 MB compressed by Tumblr), and Tumblr recommends 540x810 recommended; up to 2048x3072. Videos can be 10 minutes per video; 20 videos and 60 minutes per day, with files up to 500 MB, MOV or MP4. Search indexes 30 tags indexed in search (20 for in blog search). Schedulely checks the text length and the number of photos before a post is scheduled, so a Tumblr post is not refused at publish time for being too long.

Tumblr is generous with text compared with most networks, so long captions, short stories and detailed project notes all fit. Schedulely checks your text against the text block limit in the composer and tells you if you go over.

Images matter most on Tumblr's dashboard, where tall images and GIFs stand out. Use the recommended width so images look sharp without being resized by Tumblr. Keep GIFs small, because Tumblr has a much lower size cap for them than for photos.

Video has a daily allowance as well as a per video limit, which is worth knowing if you schedule several video posts for the same day. Schedulely sends one video per Tumblr post.

For tags, only the first ones are indexed in Tumblr search, so put your most important tags first in the caption. Schedulely keeps your hashtags in the order you wrote them.

How do you connect Tumblr and schedule a post in Schedulely?

Choose Tumblr in a client's accounts, sign in on Tumblr's own page and allow access, then pick the blog. Write the post in the planner with text, photos or a video, add hashtags for tags, choose a time in the client's time zone, and schedule it or send it for approval.

  • Connect. Sign in on Tumblr's page. Schedulely never sees the Tumblr password, and a client can connect their own blog from a connect link.
  • Pick the blog. If the Tumblr login runs several blogs, choose one. Each blog is connected as its own account, so an artist with a main blog and a sketch blog can post to either.
  • Write the post. Add text and media from your computer, phone, a Google Drive link set to Anyone with the link, or the client's library. Add hashtags for the tags you want.
  • Schedule. Pick the time, then schedule it, save it as a draft or send an approval link.

Schedulely refreshes the Tumblr sign in each time it posts, so the connection stays active between posts. If Tumblr refuses a post, it appears under Failed with the reason and can be retried in 1 tap.

How should you post on Tumblr?

Tumblr runs on tags and reblogs. Posts spread when people in a community find them through tags and reblog them to their own followers, so specific tags, strong visuals and a personal voice work better than polished brand copy. Posting regularly keeps your blog visible to the people who follow those tags.

Tumblr's audience gathers around interests: art, writing, fandoms, fashion, photography, crafts and very specific niches. People follow tags as much as they follow blogs. That makes the first few tags on each post the main way new people find you.

  • Tag like a fan. Use the words the community uses, not only broad ones. A specific tag with an active following beats a huge generic tag.
  • Lead with the visual. Photo sets and GIFs are how most posts catch the eye on the dashboard.
  • Write like a person. Tumblr users are quick to scroll past anything that reads like an advert.
  • Post steadily. A regular rhythm keeps your blog in followers' dashboards, and scheduling a week of posts in one sitting makes that easy.

Reblogging others and answering asks still happens in Tumblr itself, and that is where much of the community lives.

What can't Schedulely do on Tumblr yet?

Schedulely does not reblog posts, does not create quote, link, chat, audio or poll posts, and does not add tags separately from the hashtags in your caption. It does not post into Tumblr's queue, does not answer asks and shows no Tumblr analytics. It publishes text, photo and video posts on schedule.

Reblogs are central to Tumblr, but they are an action on someone else's post, so they stay a job for the Tumblr app. The same goes for answering asks and replying to notes. The Schedulely inbox works with Instagram only.

Tags come only from hashtags in the caption. That works well for most people, but it means a tag with spaces, such as a full phrase, needs to be written without spaces in your caption. If you want multi word tags exactly as Tumblr displays them, add them in Tumblr after the post goes out.

Posts go directly onto the blog at the time you set, not into Tumblr's queue, so if you already use Tumblr's queue for spacing, choose times in Schedulely instead. You can mix photos or one video per post, but not both in one Tumblr post.

For artists, writers and brands posting regular work, that covers the daily publishing.

Who it's for, and who it isn't

  • Writers and fandom blogs that schedule regular posts with tags
  • Brands with a Tumblr presence that want it in the same calendar as other networks

Not the right fit if you

  • Blogs built mainly around reblogging and asks
  • People who need Tumblr polls, audio or quote posts on a schedule
  • Anyone who wants Tumblr analytics in their scheduler

Questions people ask

Can you schedule Tumblr posts with another tool?

Yes. Schedulely connects to Tumblr through Tumblr's own sign in page and schedules text posts with one video or up to 10 photos to the blog you choose. The hashtags in your caption become Tumblr tags, and Tumblr posts sit in the same calendar as Instagram and your other networks.

How do tags work when Schedulely posts to Tumblr?

Schedulely reads the hashtags in your caption and adds them to the Tumblr post as tags, in the order you wrote them, up to 30. The hashtags also stay in the text. Put your most important tags first, because Tumblr search indexes only the first ones.

Can I schedule posts to more than one Tumblr blog?

Yes. Each blog is connected to Schedulely as its own account. If your Tumblr login runs several blogs, connect each one you post to, then tick the right blog for each post, or several blogs at once. Each connected blog counts as one channel when paid plans start.

Does Schedulely use Tumblr's queue?

No. Schedulely publishes the post straight onto your blog at the date and time you set, in the client's time zone. It does not add posts to Tumblr's own queue or drafts. If you rely on the Tumblr queue for spacing, set the times in Schedulely's week calendar instead.

Can Schedulely reblog posts on Tumblr?

No. Reblogging, answering asks and replying to notes are done in Tumblr itself. Schedulely publishes your own original posts with text, photos or a video. Its inbox for comments and messages works with Instagram only, so Tumblr notes and asks stay in the Tumblr app.

What image size works best on Tumblr?

Tumblr recommends 540x810 recommended; up to 2048x3072, and image files can be up to 20 MB JPEG/PNG/WEBP; GIF 5 MB (10 MB compressed by Tumblr). Tall images take up more of the dashboard and tend to catch the eye. In Schedulely you can add up to 10 photos to one Tumblr post from your computer, phone, a Google Drive link or the client's library.
